Say the phrase healthy eating and you’re bound to think of boring garden salads, celery and carrot sticks. They certainly are healthy, nutritious foods, of course, but nothing you’d call epicurean cuisine.

As you reach you 40th birthday, though, you realize that eating healthy is more important than ever. And you’re serious about changing your diet to include more nutritious choices.

Well, eating healthy may never be quite as fun as experiencing exotic entrees, delighting in delicious desserts or even anticipating an appetizer. But if you know what foods to choose, you may even find you enjoy eating them.

And once you’ve checked out these foods, you’ll no doubt go digging for others. Trust me, healthy foods surround you if you just look into them a little!

The Strawberry

Remember the joy of eating strawberry shortcake when you a child? You no doubt rejoiced in the whipped cream and the shortcake itself. But the real power of the dessert lies in the strawberries.
Mother Nature, in fact, has created just about the perfect food in the strawberry… and the blueberry…

Eight medium strawberries contain absolutely no fat and only 49 calories. But more than that they also possess three grams of fiber (that’s the substance that helps to not only keep you “regular” but also keep you feeling full long after you’ve eaten!) But packed into these eight berries is a whopping 149 percent of your vitamin C for the day! What a delightful way to keep your immune system performing at its peak!

You’ll also receive three percent of your total iron requirements and two percent of your calcium for the day - and when you reach 40 every bit of this bone-building nutrient helps!

This colorful fruit is also a great way to get your folate, potassium and manganese.
These berries are attractive and healthy because they are low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium.

We’ve saved the best attribute of strawberries for last: they are one of the most potent sources of antioxidants around!

And unlike some healthy foods, you can eat this fruit in endless ways and never seem to get tired of eating healthy!

The Apple

Then there’s the classic apple. Perhaps not quite as versatile as the berry, it packs such a nutritional wallop that you just can’t ignore it (and quite frankly, it sure does taste better than tofu!). The disguised as a modest, humble fruit is really a superhero in the nutritional world.

The apple is a tremendous source of those hard-working antioxidants, which work tirelessly to destroy free radicals. And we all know that free radicals are responsible for a host of degenerative diseases related to the aging process, including heart disease and cancer. And now some experts say that antioxidants could even help keep wrinkles at bay (oh, now I have your attention!)

Here’s a quick piece of trivia you might not know about the apple: If you eat just the peel of the fruit - not even the apple itself - on a regular basis, you can reduce your risk of developing cancer by 48 percent!

And you don’t even need to gorge yourself. An apple a day… just like the proverb… is all you need to keep your system happy and healthy!

Peanut Butter?

Now, here’s a food that will take you back to your childhood: peanut butter. It may sound strange, but it’s true. But right up front, we recommend you eat the all-natural kind. You’ll have to stir the jar every time you use it but the rewards - and the taste - are worth the effort!

Not only are peanuts a great source of those “good fats” but peanut butter can help keep you feeling fuller for a longer period of time. A recent study showed that peanut butter reduced hunger in women for up to two and a half hours. By contrast, rice cakes only staved off the hunger pangs for a measly 30 minutes!

Peanut butter also a good source of iron. When you combine it with a high-fiber wheat bread, you’ll probably notice that you stay satisfied even longer than that!

A half a peanut butter sandwich on wheat bread and an apple make a nutritious mid-day snack - and takes you back to your school days as well!

It’s true, you can radically alter your body composition by becoming more choosy about what you eat every day. Diet is responsible for approximately 70-80% of the way our body looks. With so much of our looks riding on what we eat, have you ever wondered what are the best foods to get rid of cellulite?

Green is not only good, its awesome!

Some of the very best foods to get rid of cellulite are green vegetables. Whether it’s salad, steamed green beans, asparagus, zucchini or any other green veggie, the antioxidant power of these vegetables will help get rid of cellulite. The reason is that green vegetables help to balance the body’s pH level and make it more alkaline. The standard Western diet makes the body very acidic and produces free radicals that not only cause increased cellulite storage, but also accelerates the aging process. But what if you’re a green vegetable hater? Try mixing a wheat grass powder from your local health food store with your favorite fresh juice two or three times a day.

I started out with green veggies because I believe them to be your best options in cellulite reducing foods. However, that’s not to say that other vegetables should be left out or that they are lacking in value. Pretty much any fresh vegetable you can think of will help you reduce the amount of cellulite on your body. The key is to eat large quantities of vegetables without the heavy sauces, gravies and dressings. Try a low fat or fat free type of dressing for your veggies and drizzle it lightly rather than drowning your vegetables.

Eat More Fruit

Fresh fruit is always a better option for treating a sweet tooth than candies, cookies, pastries or ice cream. Try adding more fresh fruit to your diet by replacing those high sugar low nutrient breakfast cereals with a plate full of fresh fruit and an ounce or two of almonds or walnuts. That will not only power you through your morning without the mid morning energy crash, but will give your body a good dose of early morning fiber, vitamins and enzymes that will kick start the cellulite removal process.

Eat Yourself Thin and Cellulite Free

Sounds like a bad joke or a nasty scam doesn’t it? What most people don’t realize is that it’s 100% possible to eat your way to a cellulite free body. Fresh fruits and vegetables are the best foods to get rid of cellulite along with lean protein and whole grains. Your body has an amazing ability to heal and correct itself, it only requires that you feed it appropriately. Reintroduce your body to whole foods and see just how amazingly easy it is to get rid of cellulite and lose excess weight.

Maybe your favorite backpacking food is a freeze-dried turkey dinner. There really is no “best” backpacking food. There are reasons to bring certain foods, though. Here are ten foods, and the reasons you might want to consider them.

1. Nuts. This is one of the most calorie-packed foods you can take. That means less weight to carry. With lots of protein and other nutritonal benefits, nuts are one of the best backpacking foods.

2. Olive oil. Add a little to your soups or dip bread in it. The best of the oils health-wise, you can eat it before sleeping, to stay warm, because fats generate heat when digested.

3. Trail mixes. Any mix with raisins and nuts is great for backpacking. Vitamins, minerals, protein, and the best reason - convenience.

4. Corn products. Tortilla chips or corn nuts are convenient, and they don’t seem to cause the tiredness that potato chips and other simple carbohydrates can cause.

5. Ramen noodles. When you need a hot meal fast, there isn’t much that’s better.

6. Instant coffee. A necessity for caffeine addicts, and it’s good to have a stimulant available for emergencies.

7. Wild edible berries. Learn to identify a few, and you’ll have a nutricious excuse for a break along the trail.

8. Instant sports drinks. Pour a little in your water bottle and shake. Replacing electrolytes doesn’t get more convenient.

9. Instant refried beans. When you want sustained energy, eat beans.

10. Your favorites. Having your favorite foods can help salvage a rainy backpacking trip spent in the tent.

Always consider the nature of the trip when you choose your backpacking food. Hot meals are much more important in cold climates, and convenience is king, if you want to make miles. A bottle of rum might even be appropriate, if it’s a trip wih friends.

“You can’t get good Mexican food anywhere north of Texas.”

So averred my good buddy Tony when I suggested a Mexican meal on his recent visit. Now, I’m a good deal north of Texas, being in the Heart of Massachusetts, but that’s the kind of challenge that I can’t pass up. Three hours later, he was rubbing his stuffed belly as we left Tortilla Sam’s, voted Worchester’s Best Mexican Restaurant for the third year in a row. Being voted Best Mexican Restaurant in a little northeastern city may not seem like much – till you stand in front of the window at Tortilla Sam’s and watch the tortillas – freshly mixed and cut by hand – roll through the steam press and catch a whiff of the mole. Then you realize that this is real Mexican food. And if the Mexican food in Worcester is good enough to impress Texas-born-and-raised Tony, we’ve got to figure that there are great Mexican restaurants in other unexpected places, right?

I went looking for the most out-of-the-way and unexpected places to find good Mexican food. My criteria and method were simple – and hardly foolproof. In order to make the list, the restaurant must serve primarily Mexican food, and must have been voted a Best Mexican Restaurant in a local newspaper poll. There must be some mention in the review of authenticity. If there was a comment from someone who really KNOWS Mexican food, that gets bonus points. The list is a long way from exhaustive, but if you’re looking for good Mexican food a long way from home, you just might get your craving satisfied at one of these unlikely places to find authentic Mexican food.

Charlotte, N.C.

Me, I’d go looking for a good mess of pinto beans and Southern barbecue in beautiful Charlotte, but if I did have a craving for Mexican food, I’d head on over to Taqueria Las Delicias. It only took the #8 spot on AOL’s CityGuide City’s Best awards, but any place that serves its tamales wrapped in corn husk AND offers lesser known Mexican foods like pupusas and taquitos is going to get a visit from me when I hit Charlotte.

Boston, MA

The home of baked beans and clam chowder (white, thank you very much) is also the home to Andale!, a tiny restaurant that seats 8 at the counter. Forget the ground, slightly spiced meat mush that passes for Mexican food in most of Massachusetts, and build yourself a quesadilla from chunks of roast chicken and spiced vegetables. It’s fast Mexican food at its best, even if it is in Boston.

Philadelphia, PA

Next time I’m in Philly, I’m skipping the cheese steak and heading out for Mexican food. Voted Best Mexican food in the Philly area, Coyote Crossing in Conshohocken has all the standard gringo-Mex foods on the menu, but it also has… caramel crepes and homemade sangria.

Seattle, WA

Can I get a café latte to go with the chilies relleno? El Puerco Lloron in Seattle has been serving up its handmade tortillas and fresh salsa for over two decades and they’re still making the Best Of lists. If there is real Mexican food in the gateway to Alaska, chances are that you’ll find it here.

Baltimore, MD

The folks at the Baltimore Citypaper appreciate the irony of naming a Best Mexican Restaurant in Baltimore. To paraphrase, it’s like naming the best air conditioner salesman in Antarctica. Still, they dub the Mexican food at Los Amigos Mexican restaurant ‘good’ and the wait staff friendly. Not quite a ringing endorsement, but if I get sick of crab cakes in Baltimore, I know where I’ll go.

It is well known that diabetics have to follow a strict diet to maintain under control their level of sugar in the blood, and they don not have many alternatives when talking about food.

Here you can find some of the indicated vegetables in treating the diabetes, which are easy to find on the market, and do not taste awful.

The French bean, also known as common or kidney bean is one of the most frequently vegetable used in the whole world.

For controlling diabetes it is indicated to eat beans because they are high in carbohydrates and fiber.

A great remedy for diabetes is the bean decoction. You need 60 grams of fresh bean pods, weighed after removing their seeds, you boil the pads for four hours on a slow fire in four liters of water, then you strain this decoction through fine muslin cloth and then you let it rest for eight hours. During the day it is recommended that you drink one glass of this decoction every two hours for a period of 4 to 8 weeks. You must prepare this decoction every day and drink it fresh, because it looses its medicinal properties after 24 hours.

Another useful natural product is the juice extracted from the French beans, combined with the juice of Brussels sprout, which stimulates the production of insulin.

Studies managed by Dr. James Anderson of the Human Nutrition Research Center of the US Department of Agriculture concluded that foods that lower cholesterol and prevent heart diseases, along with beans that are high in soluble fiber and reduce the level of sugar in the blood, are suitable for diabetics who develop a high risk of heart disease.

Lettuce can also be used freely by diabetics as it contains 3% or less of carbohydrates.

Tomato is useful for those who want to lose weight, is low in carbohydrates too and it is said to control the level of sugar in the urine.

A great nutritious food used in the diet of diabetics is the Soya bean. It is rich in quality proteins and fat, and poor in starch. Studies on Soya bean have been performed since 1910 and have proved the utility of this vegetable in reducing the quality of urinary sugar in diabetes patients.

One of the eldest used vegetable in treating diabetes is the onion. It is not important whether it is eaten raw or cooked, the most important thing is that onion can lower the blood sugar level in diabetes and the greater the dose, the faster the blood response.
In the 1960’s scientists discovered anti-diabetic compounds in onion, similar to the anti-diabetic pharmaceuticals that are used in stimulating insulin synthesis and release: allyl, propyl, disulphide and allicin.

An equilibrate diet, based on vegetables, fruit and juices, and with less fats and sweets, associated with an active lifestyle, quitting smoking, self measuring the level of sugar in the blood and losing weight could control the diabetes and allow the patients to live a normal life.

Here are 6 tips to choosing the best puppy food for your new companion!

1. The simple truth is, if a dog food is high quality and all natural you don’t need to feed a puppy food. Choose a food that is formulated according to the nutritional profiles of AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) for ALL stages of life.

2. Always look for a good source of protein listed in the first 5 ingredients. The two best sources of protein are chicken meal and catfish. Most people don’t realize it but chicken meal has much more protein in it than regular chicken does because all the water has been removed. So chicken meal would be the best choice. Catfish is also a good protein source and has essential oils in it.

3. Just like humans, a puppy needs vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in their food. Good nutrition is essential to a puppy and what they receive in their first year can set the stage for their entire life. It’s also a great idea to give a nutritional supplement along with their food.

4. Remember to stay away from any food with corn, wheat, glutens, dairy or soy. These ingredients can be very hard to digest. A puppy food can say all natural and sound like a great food for your puppy (corn and wheat are indeed natural) but just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s necessarily good for them. Dogs can become allergic to grains like corn and wheat, so starting them off on these grains is not a good idea.

5.NO, NO chemical preservatives! There are chemical preservatives in so much food today and it is actually a “toxin” to the body. Foods with BHA, BHT and ethoxoquin should be avoided.

6. Stay away from by-products! If you don’t know what a by product is, it’s the “leftovers” after the best meat has been removed. This could include anything from chicken heads to intestines, etc. Very yucky thought! Many commercial puppy foods add these to their food………. So read your labels closely!

Obesity is the result of various factors, differing from one individual to another. Similarly, the food required for fast weight loss also varies from one individual to another, depending on the metabolic functions of the person. There are some dangerous weight loss programs that suggest a strict diet lacking in basic nutrition required, resulting in malnutrition.

A balanced diet with the necessary nutrition, combined with regular exercises can help people lose weight easily. It is to be noted that a person has to reduce their calorie intake to benefit from any diet. It is important to do this in the right way, though, as the body requires calories and nutrients in order to function. Fruits and vegetables are considered to have a perfect combination of all the nutrients required for the body. Fish or chicken, containing high levels of protein, can compliment the other nutrients for a balanced diet. Usually, excessive carbohydrate intake is not advisable for fast weight loss. However, a certain amount of carbohydrates are necessary for the body to function properly and they should not be completely eliminated.

It is important to remember that foods for fast weight loss are chosen and eaten as a response to the biological need of hunger and not for indulging in a habit of over-eating. It is also a good idea to choose a sensible diet that conforms to the standards necessary for weight loss, but also appeals to the taste buds. In that way, the satisfaction factor is lost and food is taken as a compulsory method of treating obesity.

A balanced diet combining necessary nutrients might include fish, lean meat, spinach, cauliflower, green beans, sprouts, salads, olives, avocado, cucumber, aubergine, broccoli, leek, pimiento and berries. However, before choosing the right diet for weight loss, it is advisable to consult a physician, who can make the right diet recommendations according to the digestive and immune system of the person.
